Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, has jointly published a report into the safety and financial costs of twin births and reports that commissioning restrictions on IVF treatment are putting the lives of mothers and babies at risk. Findings found the rate of stillbirth is approximately seven times higher, and maternal mortality 2.5 times higher, in women carrying two or more babies, compared to singleton births.

Evidence suggests that the NMC’s revalidation programme is encouraging nurses and midwives to analyse the care they give by reflecting on their practice and seeking feedback from colleagues, patients and service users. The findings from the independent evaluation being conducted by Ipsos MORI suggests that revalidation is continuing to have a positive impact on the attitudes and behaviours of nurses and midwives.

New findings suggest that a third of existing and expectant mothers don’t practice pelvic floor exercises. As well as lowering the risk of incontinence, pelvic floor exercises can also help prevent / treat a prolapsed uterus. A survey conducted by Health & Aesthetics found that 29% of women who have had or are expecting a baby said that they never practised the exercises which are recommended daily both during and after pregnancy.

Two in five GPs have personal experience of mental health problems, a survey has found. Around 40% of almost 1,000 doctors questioned said they had dealt with issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar or post-traumatic stress disorder. Mental health charity Mind, which carried out the research, said GPs are working in stressful environments and should be given greater support.

The English Institute of Sport (EIS), is an organisation which provides sport science and medical support services to elite athletes through a nationwide network of expertise and facilities, working with Olympic and Paralympic summer and winter sports, as well as a limited number of professional sports. They are seeking a ‘Head of Mental Health’ leader, who will have the task of promoting and supporting positive mental health for athletes, coaches, support staff and others within the High Performance System. The new role will collaborate with National Governing Body World Class Programmes, UK Sport, as well as across the EIS on both proactive and reactive mental health services.

The NMC published the second annual data report on revalidation demonstrating transparency and information sharing to partners. As revalidation progresses, more understanding is gained which allows the regulator to adapt and improve support to nurses and midwives.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has received the Ministry of Defence’s highest award in recognition of the support it provides to the armed forces community in North Wales. The Health Board, has been hailed a model example as it employs a number of armed forces reservists among its 16,500 staff.

Data collected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) shows that 224 people died of self-inflicted injuries between 2010 and 2016 in mental health hospitals in England. Overall, the numbers appear to be falling, however it reveals that more women than men have begun taking their own lives which has led campaigners to label the NHS’s care of women facing mental health issues as “not fit for purpose”.

Sands Lothians (stillbirth and neonatal death society) have produced an animation about post mortems for newly bereaved parents to help with difficult conversations and decisions at a traumatic time. The film was created from the experiences of other bereaved parents.

Sue Killen has joined the NMC as interim Chief Executive and Registrar. Previously, Sue was Chief Executive of St John Ambulance for ten years and has also held a range of senior roles in the civil service including as a Director General.
